GUIDELINES & INSTRUCTIONS FOR REASSIGNED TIME

The purpose of reassigned time is solely to support WSAS faculty research and artistic endeavors. Other faculty support is excluded, for instance, journal editing, dissertation advisement, the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students, conference organizing, and other such professional activities. Untenured faculty who receive twenty-four hours of contractual reassigned time are not eligible for Weissman reassigned time during their first five years.

The following guidelines apply to reassigned time projects submitted to this office. The committee may reject proposals that depart from the guidelines.

  1. All applications must be submitted online. The application page should have the applicant’s name and department, a brief project title, the semester reassigned time is being requested, and an abstract that outlines the project in general terms. The abstract should not exceed 100 words in length.

  2. The Project Description is not to exceed five double-spaced pages, and should describe the nature of the project in language comprehensible to the non-specialist. The project may be scholarly or artistic, but the applicant must demonstrate the significance and feasibility of the project. Any concrete outcomes, such as book chapters or journal articles, should be fully described. If the project is ongoing, the applicant should specify which portion of the project will be completed during the reassigned time period. If the work is in an early stage, this fact should be made clear.

  3. The application must include an up-to-date Baruch Curriculum Vitae.

  4. Applications must be accompanied by a Progress Report of work completed during the last semester for which an award of reassigned time was made. The Progress Report should be a succinct summary of goals accomplished and is not to exceed two double-spaced pages. Such reports should be filed by both those reapplying for reassigned time to continue work supported in previous semesters, and by those shifting to a new project area.

  5. There is no limit to the number of awards that may be made to an individual department. No attempt will be made to distribute awards among departments.

  6. Members of the WSAS Faculty Committee on Research and Travel may submit applications. These will be judged separately by the Dean, who will be free to seek advice from other members of the faculty.

  7. Each award will consist of three hours of reassigned time.
